About the Session
This presentation will explore the past and present challenges of developing the “Changing Perspectives” virtual exhibit. Created in partnership with the Vancouver Maritime Museum, the exhibit details George Vancouver’s journey here in the 1790’s in search of the Northwest passage and to map the Northwest Coast.
First tracing how the exhibit was conceptualized, the speakers will discuss how they established collaborative partnerships with Indigenous stakeholders to ensure their voices and historical perspectives informed the final product. They will also share the unexpected challenges and the opportunities that were created by COVID in creating a digital media exhibit. Finally, they will invite the audience to have a conversation about the potential futures for digital or multimodal projects within the museum setting.
Dylan Burrows
Dylan Burrows is an Indigenous doctoral candidate at the University of British Columbia’s Department of History. Raised on Nishnaabeg territory in what is now Eastern Ontario, he lives and works as a guest on the ancestral, traditional, and unceded lands of the Coast Salish peoples. His dissertation, Line-Crossings: An Indigenous Labour History of the Convergent Arctic, 1849-1948, examines Inuit acts of labour in Arctic North America in the contexts of British, Danish, and Canadian Arctic colonialisms.
